Crossroads @ Scala is the new name of the event with a different format, which will take place every fourth Sunday of the month at Scala. Karen van der Stappen created the format for this event in consultation with the Tipo Tango team.
the name was chosen because it captures how people from different countries and cultures brought together musical genres and dance movements to create the Argentine tango. These encounters, at countless intersections, still take place every day and continue to influence this dance. At Scala, it happens every fourth Sunday!
How will we break new ground?
- The combination of Lab & Salon: seven hours of dance!
- The invitation to share a meal allows you to enjoy the conviviality of Brabant and the famous hospitality of Tipo Tango. You can bring your own lunch/dinner/snacks or simply order a pizza from the bar.
- The DJ starts at 17.00 or sometimes earlier. The choice of DJs is mainly determined by the desire not to play exclusively traditional music, and we invite DJs who are known for their ability to recognise the needs of the dancers and adapt the music accordingly.
- The Lab
The challenges we want to face are
1. Sharing knowledge
2. Making the best use of the tango techniques collected by Karen (see below)
3. Increase creativity and improvisation
4. Role reversal both during the dance and within the tanda if you want
5. Meet new people on the dance floor
6. Each lab has a theme and we will link to youtube parts before, during, and after the lab.
Every fourth Sunday, Karen van der Stappen will be your regular host, together with the members of the Tipo crew.
Tango techniques à la Karen
In preparation for the Lab Crossroads, I began reflecting on the adventurous journey along the endlessly varied paths (tango and tai chi classes and workshops) I have been following for 20 years. I began to categorise what I had learned around the question: which tango laws facilitate creativity, freedom, and improvisation?
We can train these basic techniques, complemented by your insights: individually and together. We will use this (re)recognition of the basic rules to deepen our love for the dance: Long live Argentine Tango!!!
